Service Guidelines

Service Component; Volunteer Ideas

“And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’” -Matthew 25:40

Here are just a few of the MANY service opportunities in the area:

  • Welcome Inn

    • Welcome INN, the INN standing for Interfaith Needs Network, has been helping the needy of south Orange County for over 20 years.  Monday through Saturday evenings volunteers serve free meals to homeless and low-income people in the Capistrano Beach/Dana Point area, located in Orange County, California. Meals are also served on Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoon; therefore, ensuring a meal is available every day of the week to those in need.  Welcome INN is an interfaith, non-profit, all volunteer organization, which has been offering hot meals, clothing, and toiletries, to approximately 50 to 70 homeless or low-income people daily – many of them regular visitors, for nearly two decades.
    • They can be contacted here:  866-334-5210  or email them here;

  • Family Assistance Ministries or FAM

    • Family Assistance Ministries is providing food, shelter, and client aid to thousands of people in South Orange County. We provide shelter, utility assistance, transportation assistance, medical, dental, prescriptions assistance, financial counseling and courses, free income tax preparation, as well as collaboration with other social services organizations to provide referrals and medical screenings, immunizations, eye glasses, and much more! We belong to several collaborative and social services regional groups in order to provide full services to our clients in need.
    • They can be contacted here:  (949) 492-8477

  • Laura’s House

    • Laura’s House provides unduplicated domestic violence-related services to the 915,000 residents of Orange County, California and beyond. Over the past 20 years, Laura’s House has provided shelter and supportive services to more than 4,000 abused women and children and counseling, life skills education and legal assistance to over 50,000 persons.  There are capacities for teens to volunteer in their Resale stores and other volunteer opportunities.

This is by no means an exhaustive list!  Here are a few helpful tips:

  1. If you are already doing some other kind of service for school credit, this can be used for the Confirmation program.
  2. Liturgical ministry at St. Edwards or other parishes can count as well.
  3. High schools usually have a ready list of places where service volunteering will be taking place on campus.
  4. St. Edward Parish has various service opportunities for Confirmation students.  Information on these events will be emailed out as they arise, but please don’t rely on them.
  5. Don’t forget the power of of D.I.Y. projects!  You can make kits for homeless persons, help your family clean out the house for items to be donated, organize a beach clean up or think of your own idea.

What really matters is that a service project is done that you care about.  As you write your one page reflection that can be submitted through the Confirmation website, it’s important that you have taken the necessary time in your heart to truly think about the service project done.   At the heart of service is a passion to help people and a desire to change the world for Jesus Christ.

Christ Has No Body

Christ has no body but yours,

No hands, no feet on earth but yours,

Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this world,

Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,

Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.

-Teresa of Avila (1515–1582)
